A summary of the work NHS England is doing on open access and repositories.

The NHS National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) published its updated Open Access publication policy for NIHR–funded research submitted on or after 1 June 2022.

It is aligned to the new UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) policy on open access publishing of UKRI-funded research.

In 2020 NHS England and NIHR jointly commissioned Information Power to undertake a piece of work to review and make recommendations about publishing and publication procurement practices across the health and social care system.

The work comprised:

  • an analysis of publications in health and care in last 5 years
  • an analysis of spend on Article Processing Charges (APCs) and subscriptions
  • focus groups and interviews with NHS research managers and knowledge and library staff
  • facilitating a strategic roundtable in October 2020

The full report 'Recommendations about publishing and publication procurement practices across the health and social care system' is published in NIHR Open Research.
