The course outline for Library Carpentry training.
Course overview
Library Carpentry workshops teach introductory software and data skills with a focus on the needs and requirements of library and information professionals.
During the workshop, you will learn the fundamentals of:
- working with data and regular expressions
- data cleaning and preparation for further analysis
- finding and working with data files from the command line shell
- managing files using version control
The workshop will be delivered online (via Zoom) over 2 days in an interactive and informal setting where you will code along live with instructors and have the opportunity to have many of their questions answered.

Intended audience
This course is aimed at any healthcare knowledge and library services staff who have an interest in developing and using software and data skills.
Prerequisites
You must commit to both days of the course and have the correct technology to participate.
Learning outcomes
By the end of the session you will learn how to:
- cut through the jargon terms and phrases of software development and data science
- apply concepts from these fields in library tasks
- identify and use best practices in data structures
- programmatically transform and map data from one form to another
- work effectively with researchers, information technology (IT), and systems colleagues
- automate repetitive, error prone tasks
